地图上的老厦门The Traditional Xiamen on the Map

厦门岛从几百年前的小渔村，到明清时期的海防前哨，再到最早开埠的通商口岸，发展成现在高楼林立的繁华都市。

Centuries ago, Xiamen was just a small village on the island and became an outpost of coastal defense in Qing dynasty and then grew up as the oldest coastal trading port. Nowadays, Xiamen has developed to be a bustling city full of skyscrapers

其实,不同时代的人对厦门这座城市的范围定义也不尽相同。在我小的时候，中山路、中山公园一带才称作厦门，过了火车站就不算厦门了。

In fact, people of different generation have different definition of Xiamen. When I was a kid, only the area where the Zhongshan Road and Zhongshan Park are located was zoned as Xiamen and the area beyond the train station was not a part of Xiamen

15岁的时候，我离开厦门到美国读书工作，一呆就是10年。回来后，发现厦门变大了，同时许多老街也消失了。所以我开始走街串巷，去感受这个城市的变化，也去寻找我记忆中的老厦门。

When I was fifteen, I left Xiamen for America for study. And ten years later when I’m back, I saw Xiamen grew bigger and many old streets disappeared. I wandered about different streets and lanes to feel about the change to this city and recollect traditional Xiamen in my memory.

老厦门指的是厦门最早的建成区，北至厦禾路，东至百家村，南至厦门港，西临鹭江道。上世纪二三十年代，厦门的城市建设经历了一段高峰期，填海筑路、修建码头、规划市场……大量的华侨返厦投资建设，盖起了一排排中西合璧的骑楼、洋房，奠定了老市区的格局。

The traditional Xiamen I talked about refers to the oldest place that was first zoned as Xiamen. It was as far north as Xiahe Road, as far east as Baijiacun, as far south as Xiamen Port and faced Lujiang Avenue in the west. Between 1920s and 1930s, Xiamen reached the peak of city construction and many people returning from oversea invested large fund in constructing Xiamen such as reclaiming land from sea to build road, dock and planning markets. And rows of house in Chinese and western style combined established the layout of Xiamen’s old downtown.

老市区经历了岁月的洗礼，她浓缩了厦门人的华侨文化与码头记忆，承载着厚重的闽南人文。时至今日，依然在钢筋水泥的包围下独具一格，韵味悠长。

The old downtown has weathered through the years, precipitating the culture of oversea Xiamen people and dock memory and also passing down the strong culture of south Fujian. Even today, we still can sense the unique Xiamen under its high buildings made of steel and concrete.

那时，天天行走于老街巷的我很渴望有一个向导。走进商店，有鼓浪屿、厦大、曾厝垵的手绘地图，可就没有厦门老城区的手绘地图。我想,作为厦门最有历史沉淀、文化底蕴的一个区域，怎么能够被遗忘呢？

Since I was back to Xiamen, I wandered about the old streets and lanes all day long, longing for a tour guide. The hand-drawn map of Kulangsu Island, Xiamen University and Zengcuoan were all available in shops but none of shops sold the hand-drawn map of old Xiamen downtown. How can the place that precipitates the most important culture of Xiamen be forgotten? 

所以，那年我花了几个月的时间走遍了老城区的200多条街巷，寻访，拍摄、记录，核对资料，用两三种颜色的水笔勾勒出了老城区粗略的手绘地图。

So I spent a couple of months travelling among more than 200 streets and lanes in old downtown, visiting, shooting and recording what I found and finally sketched a rough map of old downtown in three color ink

地图手稿在发布到网络后获得许多人的共鸣。于是,我决定将其印制出来，并附上景点介绍与路线攻略, 既方便大家行走，也让大家更多的去关注我们的老城区。我一步步把手稿与卫星图核对、调整、电子化，最终在2013年做出了厦门第一份《老街巷手绘地图》。

This sketching map drew many people’s resonance once it was released on the website and then I decided to print it out and attach with the introduction of scenic spots and route guide so that it’s easy and convenient for people to travel along the old downtown, getting people’s more attention to Xiamen’s old downtown. I checked my sketching map with satellite map and made some modification and finally in 2013, the first hand-drawn map of Xiamen’s old downtown was published. 

这五年来，我对老厦门的探索一直没有停歇，从制作带有厦门元素的文创衍生品到撰写老厦门的文史专题。我也收藏了不少有关厦门的老地图与旧物，令我地图上的资料更为准确。

Over these five year, I never stopped exploring old Xiamen by making cultural derivatives featured in Xiamen and writing some article about Xiamen‘s culture and history. And I also collected some old maps and antique about Xiamen which make the information on my map more accurate. 

桥亭街、盐溪街、虞朝巷……每条街巷的名称不仅仅是一个代号，背后更有一个故事。这些老街巷我已经不知走了多少回了，还会继续走下去。这是我品味厦门的一种方式。

The name of each street or lane such as Qiaoting Street, Yanxi Street, Yuchao Lane is not just a code name, and it has the story behind as well. I have walked along these streets and lanes for numerous times and will keep going as this is the way I feel about Xiamen.

在这个寻找与探索的过程中，我了解到了厦门的成长脉络，感受到厦门的人文魅力，让我更加热爱我的家乡，找到属于自己的文化归属感。

While I was exploring this city, I learnt about its growing path, feeling its charm in culture which makes me love my hometown more deeply and also let me find my own culture belonging.
